What’s the difference between a course and a course section?

Workday Student has courses and course sections, which have a parent/child relationship.

Courses

Courses are a school or unit’s academic offerings. Think Intro to Psychology or Fiction Writing.

Courses include essential information like the course title, description, academic level, subject, etc. Information at the course level applies to all its sections.

Course sections

Course sections are the specific instances of a course for which a student registers during a given academic period.

Course sections include the specific time-based information, like the instructor, when the course section occurs, etc. Think Intro to Psychology held at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Fall 2025, or Intro to Psychology held at 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
